A Soldier's Diary (1922)

The anonymous soldier who owned this diary served on the Asia Minor front from March 1919 until its collapse in August 1922. The majority of the entries date from May 1922, when he was assigned to the 7th company of the 37th Infantry Regiment in Osmanköy. His descriptions vividly illustrate the last days of military life on the Greek front before the Turkish counterattack, the collapse of the front, and the disorderly retreat. Of great interest is his joy when he finds time and has books to read: "I am so moved! Let me rather have more books than food."
