Οι μουφτήδες είναι εκπρόσωποι της μουσουλμανικής θρησκείας, επιφορτισμένοι με το ρόλο ερμηνείας του Κορανίου – διαδικασίας απαραίτητης για την απονομή της δικαιοσύνης. Η ίδια η λέξη “μουφτί”, αραβικής προέλευσης, σημαίνει “ο ερμηνευτής του νόμου”. Ο μουφτής, ουσιαστικά, εντέλλεται να γνωμοδοτήσει στον μουσουλμάνο ιεροδίκη (“καδής”) βάσει των επιταγών του Κορανίου.
