Η οικοδόμηση του τζαμιού της Βαλιδέ σουλτάνας (Γενί τζαμί) ξεκίνησε το 1597 από τη Σαφιγέ, μητέρα του σουλτάνου Μαχμέτ Γ’ (1595-1603), οι εργασίες όμως σταμάτησαν μετά το θάνατο του σουλτάνου. Το έργο ολοκληρώθηκε, εν τέλει, το 1663 υπό την επίβλεψη της Βαλιδέ σουλτάνας Τουρχάν, μητέρας του σουλτάνου Μεχμέτ Δ' (1648-1687).
