trial_description_8:
Fragment from lower part of echinus, preserving the annulets. One side heavily worn by traffic, which must have occurred before the fragment was incorporated in the Late Roman Fortification since the worn surface is overlaid by late Roman mortar. From a large and very fine capital, probably of Periclean date.
Perhaps to be associated with the series of three large Doric geisa found incorporated in the paving of the Panathenaic Way a few meters farther south; they are congruent in scale, quality and history.
Pentelic marble.
