context:
From marble pile between Panathenaic Way and S.E. corner of Gymnasium. The blocks A 3740-A 3749 may belong to the same monument as do the blocks A 3732-A 3739. However, these crowning blocks were not found in the marble piles left by the Greek excavators at the south end of the Stoa of Attalos a century ago. Rather, these were discovered in May 1950 in the foundations of the northern tower of the Late Roman Fortification Wall at the south end of the Stoa of Attalos. Many of them may be recognized still in situ in photo XLII-38. In that picture, the bottom of the six visible blocks is immediately recognizable as A 3741. In photo XLII-69 one can see A 3744.
